Khurram Jahangir Khan

Khurram Jahangir Khan is a 20-year-old student that loves to volunteer. He has recently won the New Resident Volunteer of the Year award all while juggling a Bachelor of Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne.

Khurram arrived in Australia 3 years ago and he used the tool of volunteering and community service to further adapt to the community – which is in itself an exceptional method to integrate with the society.

Khurram Jahangir Khan, a City School (Melbourne) alumnus, has been awarded the New Resident Volunteer of the Year – Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Award 2014 for his outstanding contribution to the Australian and international community. It was presented to him on 12 October 2014 at Cruden Farm, the home of the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch.

Khurram volunteers with several local and international organisations in Victoria, including Sudanese Australian Integrated Learning (SAIL), where he is the Coordinator and mentor for emigrants with a non-English background. In addition, he is also a student representative at the University of Melbourne and an active member of the Rotary Club. He is also an Alumni Representative for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Victoria, where his role is to create leadership opportunities for the participants. He has also received the Mayoral Youth Award from Wyndham City Council in May 2014 for the category ‘volunteering, community service and leadership’.
Khurrum was ‘Student of the Year 2013’ at The City School PAF Chapter, A Level Section. During his time at The City School (Melbourne), he actively participated in volunteer and charity work and received a commendation for his work as the President of the Outreach Society (2012-13).

Khurrum by his achievements in his short time he has been in Australia has set an example for other young immigrants and asylum seekers of what can be achieved in a short space of time. He also demonstrates that by working for others, we can not only make the world a better place but we can also improve our own lives and gain great satisfaction in our achievements in helping others less well off.
